We are certified to the ISO 45001 international standard for occupational health and safety management which sets out the requirements for a robust health and safety system that is geared towards preventing work-related illnesses, accidents and injuries.
Our greatest priority is the health and safety of our people. Working at a smelter presents a range of occupational health and safety risks, all of which must be carefully managed to ensure that members of our workforce go home safely to their families at the end of each shift.
Through our ongoing focus on safety, we have achieved a notable reduction in injuries. This can be attributed to our continuous investment in various forms of safety education and training, the ongoing practice of visible felt leadership and learning from incidents to prevent repeats. Employees apply the SLAM (Stop-Look-Assess-Manage) technique and undergo training in Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Control.
Our most significant occupational health risk is exposure to manganese, mainly in the form of dust that can either be inhaled or ingested in contaminated food and drinks. Transalloys has a range of measures in place to prevent exposure. These include engineering controls, personal protective equipment, behaviour-based education and training, and the provision of adequate facilities to prevent exposure.
